Fetzer Valley Oaks Gewürztraminer 2007

Tonight I'm reviewing a wine suggested by a fellow blogger and friend of wineforthecheap.com who calls herself the Diva of Yum, but who we call Patty. Check out her blog by clicking here. She recommended Fetzer Vineyards Valley Oaks Gewürztraminer which, conveniently enough, just happened to be featured up front at Wegmans this week. The opportunity to do our first reader's selection quite excited me at first, until I remembered the gewürztraminer is a white, not a red. So I wanted to leave it to Joy to review, and had been hoping instead tonight to sample a $2.97 red my mother purchased at Wal-Mart. But I guess not, since Joy announced on Facebook that I'm reviewing the gewürztraminer. So here I am. Drinking white wine. On a Saturday night.

First off, what in the Hell kind of word is gewürztraminer? I don't believe any such thing exists. I think gewürztraminer is the name of a practical joke, not a wine. I think the good folks at Fetzer will offer you a variety of samples during the vineyard tour, and once you have a nice warm feeling and a slight slowness of speech, they'll offer you the gewürztraminer. Then the furniculurablum and the hornishasipalip. I have proof as well. Gewürztraminer, it turns out, is an anagram of "r german wite ruz."

Our German white ruse. Clever.

Let me for a moment, however, set aside all bitterness and review the wine with the impartiality I'm known for, or rather would be known for, if I'd been in the business of reviewing wine for more than a month.

It's a good wine. I like it. It's light, fruity, and very sweet. It's very citrusy, like a mimosa, although not really. I just think it would taste good mixed with orange juice and would probably try that if I was still in college. But I digress. The gewürztraminer is like smashing your face into a pineapple and snorting like a pig as you suck the juice into your nose and mouth, only more so. I mean that in a good way. And don't get any ideas.

Anyway, to go back to the name. Perhaps I'm being a little too conspiratorial in this review. Gewurztraminer: name wi regrutzr.

Name we regret, sir.

They even called me "sir."

8 out of 10.

  2. yes, great wine for spicy food, smoked fish or even with muenster cheese. as for Guwurztraminer, it literally means, "spicy traminer (the sort of white grape)"

  4. Sampled this wine with a couple of friends over the weekend. We all really enjoyed it. It is indeed very sweet. I was trying to read this review to them before we drank it, they sure got a kick out of me trying to pronounce the words.

    Thanks for the recommendation.

  7. I simply love this wine! have tried multiple brands and nobody does it like Fetzer! The other ones that I have tried are sweeter than Fetzer, and the quality can not be compared! During the holidays I buy it by the case, and give as gifts! I love my gewurztraminer!

  8. Wow, am I late! We always keep this in the house (down to one more bottle, have to get another case). It actually is more fruity than sweet, though I don't know the residual sugar off hand. We also use it heavily in cooking. Even when "dry white" is called for, and love the flavors it adds to chicken and other dishes. Just had sausage, onions, peppers on pasta tonight, with the giwurz added.
