Tall Horse, South Africa, Sauvignon Blanc 2007

Disclaimer #1: I have never been a fan of white wine.

Disclaimer #2: I'm LOVING the fact that our blog has three official 'followers' at this point in time! Holla.

So, this review is mainly motivated by greed. The greed to potentially attract more readers by reviewing a type of wine that has never appealed to me. I also wanted to be the first one to court the white wine drinkers. You see, Mike and I have started to slowly drop phrases like 'Team Joy' and 'Team Mike' when referring to this blog and our individual posts. (T-shirts coming soon!) It was only a matter of time before one of us realized that there was a whole demographic of cheap wine drinkers out there that we had almost forgotten about entirely.

Since I'm incredibly unfamiliar with white wines, I decided to choose the cheapest and most outrageous bottle I could find in the store last weekend. It was quite liberating actually. I didn't pay any attention to the labels at first, I just went up and down the aisles scanning the price tags. I settled on Tall Horse because it was $5.99 and hails from South Africa. The bottle claims to have a 'dash of herbaceous grassland aromas and flavours that race across the palate stretching to a lively fresh finish'. Now that's a description. I can just smell the zebras now.

This is a lovely wine. It has a sweet and simple flavor that went incredibly well with the fish we prepared for dinner last night. There also wasn't that unpleasant aftertaste that has accompanied most of the white wines I've tried in my life. I'm pleasantly surprised with how much I like this wine and hope to find more cheap whites that please me as much. I'm not ready to jump on the white wine band wagon just yet though; I think I just got lucky picking out the bottle. Who can go wrong with those herbaceous grassland aromas?

I give this Tall Horse a 3.5 out of 5. That reminds me, don't forget to take our poll, currently located to the left side of our posts. Mike and I would love your input on classifying our scoring system!

Wegmans, $5.99

  1. When I sample a wine do I really want Zebras on the nose?

  4. I am an Aussie Bundy and diet coke drinker on holiday in Malta. I also collect giraffes and have been drinking Tall Horse for the last two weeks. Does this make me a follower?

  5. Malta? Niiiiiice! Giraffes too? Now you're definitely a follower, whether you planned on it or not! Happy to hear from fellow Tall Horse drinkers from around the world. What's a Bundy? Sounds deliciously alcoholic :)
